A student who travels to another country to study, leaves behind a whole world, a culture, their parents, family and friends. To try himself/herself in a new place, speaking a new language and struggles to align his/her values with that of the natives, learns about their history, about their lives; and all of this at a young age. With so many sacrifices comes an opportunity of growth.
We respect this sacrifice and make this transition easier for them, but in this extraordinary situation there is only so much we can offer. What if we could ask people who have already been in our country, associated with our University, for help? What if we could gather their experiences and somehow make this transition easier?
At the faculty of Social Science, under the supervision of Dr. Marcin Koczan we have a programme, “Mentoring” where the 1’st year students of the course have been assigned 2’nd year seniors who are constantly helping them with the day to day chaos as it unfolds. Be it signing up for PE or finding materials to read, or many personal problems about easing into Polish culture, they have a helping hand.
